Leza
3D printing beautifully
The goal of this project was to design and make a visually interesting planter set. Using a 3D printer allows freedom to explore natural and organic forms.
Identifying form
Inspiration was taken from the sculptor, Barbara Hepworth, who was famous for her prominent use of negative space in her work.
Process
Multiple rounds of scale models were printed to solidify form, proportion and the planters' relationships with each other.
3D printing
The two final planters were printed separately on a large 3D printer with a combined print time of about 50 hours. They were both successful prints, however they needed edge and surface refinement.
Sanding and painting
Not only does the stone spray paint contribute to the planters' organic look, but also the textured finish makes Leza more durable and provides more resistance to water, wind and sun.
Final form and finish
The planters create unique visual compositions as individual pieces, standing next to each other, or stacked together as one.
